The Unconventional Genius of Alex Sepkus  

Off-beat. Quirky. Eccentric. These words barely scratch the surface when describing Alex Sepkus, an artist whose creativity defied convention. To call the man or his jewelry ordinary would be a grave understatement—his work transcended the ordinary to become something entirely unique.  

Born in Vilnius, Lithuania, Sepkus was steeped in art from an early age. His father was an esteemed architect, and his grandfather a talented painter, fostering in Alex a deep appreciation for beauty, structure, and precision. After completing a graduate degree in industrial design, Sepkus discovered his passion for metalsmithing and began forging his own unconventional path. Eventually setting up shop in New York City, his striking style quickly attracted admirers from all over the world.  

A Fusion of Ancient and Modern Inspirations  

Sepkus’ jewelry possesses an otherworldly charm, as if each piece were a lost artifact from an ancient era. His intricate designs recall the grandeur of Byzantine mosaics, the dreamlike aesthetic of Gustav Klimt, and the allure of forgotten treasures. Yet, despite their historic feel, his creations are unmistakably modern. Crafted from 18K gold and platinum, and adorned with vibrant gemstones and diamonds, Sepkus' work is a mesmerizing fusion of bold colors, textures, and microscopic detail—each piece a miniature masterpiece meant to be held, admired, and worn as a personal statement of art.  

A Lasting Legacy Beyond His Passing  

In September 2021, Alex Sepkus passed away unexpectedly, leaving a profound void in the jewelry world. However, his creative vision lives on. His longtime business partner, Jeff Feero, reassured clients and fans, saying, “Alex always prided himself on working with master jewelers who could execute his designs to his exacting standards—and, as he liked to say, sometimes even better than he could.” Fortunately, Sepkus left behind an extensive archive of unreleased designs, ensuring that his unique artistry will continue to inspire for years to come.  

A Personal Connection with Alara  

Our founder, Babs, had the rare privilege of conversing with Sepkus—an artist known for his reserved nature—and was always thrilled to receive his annual holiday card, each featuring one of his own artistic photographs. Alara continues to have the honor of working with Alex Sepkus Designs, creating exclusive pieces using his original designs. Our collaboration showcases his exquisite artistry with the addition of Montana sapphires and Yogo sapphires—making us the first and only jeweler to offer Sepkus’ iconic work with these rare and enchanting gemstones.  

Alex Sepkus may be gone, but his legacy lives on through the beauty, imagination, and craftsmanship of his timeless jewelry.
